# Sub-organizations

Sub-organizations have been replaced by projects. Existing sub-organizations keep working until you cancel them. You cannot create a new one; to separate your work, [create a project](https://docs.clinikapi.com/dashboard/projects/create-a-project.md) instead.

## Before you start

* The **Sub-organizations** section only appears in [Organization settings](https://docs.clinikapi.com/dashboard/organizations/organization-settings.md) when your organization still has sub-organizations.
* Only organization **owners and admins** can generate a key for one or cancel it.

## What you'll see

The page is headed **Sub-Organizations** with the line "Sub-organizations have been replaced by projects. Existing sub-organizations keep working until you cancel them."

* **Each row** shows the name, URL name, description, a status pill (**active**, **suspended** and so on), the requests per month (for example "50,000 req/mo"), the date created, and **Billing active** when its subscription is running.
* **Empty state:** "This organization has no sub-organizations. Use projects to separate your work."
* Green and red message bars appear at the top after an action, with a small cross to close them.

## Generate another key for an existing one

**1. Choose the key icon**

On the sub-organization's row, select the key icon (its tooltip is **Generate API Key**). The panel is titled **Generate API key**: "A key scoped to this sub-organization."

**2. Name it and pick an environment**

Type a **Key name** (up to 80 characters, for example `Backend API key`) and choose **Test** or **Live** under **Environment**. A live key needs a paid plan.

**3. Generate**

Select **Generate key** (**Generating…** while it works). The panel changes to **Key created**: "Copy it now. It is shown only this once." Select **Copy key**, then **Done**.

A cancelled or suspended sub-organization cannot have new keys.

## Cancel a sub-organization

Select the bin icon on its row (tooltip **Cancel Sub-Organization**). The confirmation, titled **Cancel sub-organization**, says cancelling revokes all of its API keys, so any integration using them stops working immediately, and cancels its subscription. Choose **Cancel sub-organization** to go ahead or **Keep it** to back out. A green message confirms it.

Cancelling is the only way out: a sub-organization cannot be deleted, and its billing details cannot be edited.

## Common questions

> **Can I still create a sub-organization?**
>
> No. Sub-organizations have been replaced by projects. Existing ones keep working until you cancel them.

> **Is a sub-organization the same as a project?**
>
> No. A project groups API keys and the records they create inside your organization. A sub-organization was a separate tenant, billed on its own. Use projects to separate environments and work.

> **Can I scope a webhook to an existing sub-organization?**
>
> Yes. See [Webhooks](https://docs.clinikapi.com/dashboard/projects/webhooks.md).

> **What happens to its data if I cancel?**
>
> Its keys are revoked at once and the subscription is cancelled. Anything using those keys stops working immediately, so move integrations first.

## Troubleshooting

| What you see | What to do |
| - | - |
| "Give the key a name (up to 80 characters)." | The key name is empty or too long. |
| "Live keys need a paid plan. Upgrade in Billing, or create a test key." | You chose **Live** on a free plan. Choose **Test**. |
| "That sub-organization could not be found, or it is not active." | It was cancelled or is not yours. Refresh the page. |
| "Could not revoke the sub-organization's keys. Nothing was cancelled; please try again." | Retry; nothing changed. |
| "The sub-organization is cancelled and its keys are revoked, but its subscription could not be stopped. Contact [support@clinikapi.com](mailto:support@clinikapi.com)…" | Email support so they stop the billing; you need do nothing else. |
