# Project settings

> Rename a project, find its reference and details, and delete or restore it.

# Project settings

## What this is for

**Project settings** is where you manage the project itself rather than the data inside it: change its name, copy its permanent reference, see its plan, size, region and status at a glance, and (for owners) delete it. ## Before you start

* Any member can look at the details.
* Only an **owner or admin** can rename a project.
* Only the organization **owner** can delete one.

## Rename a project

**1. Open Project settings**

Choose **Project settings** in the sidebar. The page is titled **Project settings** with two tabs: **General** and **Compute and Disk**. You start on **General**.

**2. Edit the name**

In **Project name**, type the new name. It must be 3 to 60 characters. Extra spaces are tidied.

**3. Save**

Select **Save** (it reads **Saving…** briefly). The **Save** button stays disabled until you change something. A message says **Project renamed**.

Renaming changes only the label. The project's reference, keys and data are untouched.

## Delete a project

**1. Find the Danger zone**

On **General**, scroll to the red **Danger zone** card. It explains that deleting revokes all of the project's API keys at once and that its sandbox data is kept for 7 days.

**2. Start the deletion**

Select **Delete project**. A panel titled "Delete (project name)" opens: "This revokes every key of the project now. You can restore the project for 7 days."

**3. Type the name to confirm**

Type the project's exact name in the box labelled "Type (name) to confirm". Capital letters and spacing must match. The red **Delete project** button stays disabled until it matches.

**4. Delete**

Select **Delete project** (**Deleting…** briefly). A message says **Project deleted. You can restore it for 7 days.** and you return to the project list.

## What you'll see

Under the name box is a table of facts:

| Row | Meaning |
| - | - |
| **Reference** | The permanent 20-letter code, with a copy button (**Copy project reference**). Quote it when you contact support. |
| **Organization** | The organization it belongs to. |
| **Plan** | The organization's plan. |
| **Compute** | **Small**, **Medium**, **Large** or **XL**. |
| **Data** | **Sandbox (test keys)** or **Dedicated**. |
| **Region** | **United States (us-east-1)**. |
| **Created** | The date it was created. |
| **Status** | The same coloured status as on [Projects](https://docs.clinikapi.com/dashboard/projects/projects-home.md). |

If you cannot rename, the box is disabled and a line reads **Only an owner or admin can rename the project.** If you cannot delete, the Danger zone reads **Only an owner of the organization can delete a project.**

## Common questions

> **Will renaming break my integration?**
>
> No. Your code uses API keys, which do not depend on the project name.

> **What is the reference for?**
>
> It is the project's permanent identifier, the same in addresses and in the project switcher. It never changes.

> **What exactly is deleted?**
>
> All keys are revoked immediately. The sandbox data is kept for 7 days in case you restore, then permanently removed.

> **Why must I type the name to delete?**
>
> It is a safety check so that a stray click cannot delete a project.

> **Can I change the region?**
>
> Not from this page. The region is shown for information.

## Troubleshooting

| What you see | What to do |
| - | - |
| "Give the project a name." / "The name must be at least 3 characters." / "The name must be 60 characters or fewer." | Adjust the length. |
| "The name cannot contain control characters." | Remove invisible characters, for example from a paste. |
| "That project could not be found, or you do not have access." | It was deleted or belongs elsewhere. Reload. |
| "Type the project name exactly to delete it." | The confirmation text does not match. Copy the name exactly. |
| "Something went wrong. Please try again." | A temporary failure. Retry. |
| "That organization could not be found, or you do not have access." | You lack the owner/admin role for this act. Ask an owner. |
