What this is for

The dashboard uses a handful of terms that are obvious to experienced developers and puzzling to everyone else. Each is explained once here, in everyday language, with a link to the page where you use it. Entries are in alphabetical order.

Terms

Compute size. How powerful your project’s server is: Small, Medium, Large or XL. A bigger size can do more at once and costs more. Free projects share a sandbox and have no size to choose. See Compute and Disk. Live key. An API key starting with clk_live_ that works against real production data. It needs a paid plan and should live only on your own server. Compare test key. See Access: API keys. Organization. Your company or team inside ClinikAPI. It owns the members, the plan and the billing, and it holds one or more projects. See The console layout. Point-in-time recovery. An optional add-on that keeps continuous backups so you can restore a project to any chosen moment, instead of only to the last nightly backup. See Compute and Disk. Project. A workspace inside an organization for one application or environment. Its API keys and the practice records they create are separate from your other projects. Webhooks, Logs, Realtime and Usage are opened from a project but show the whole organization. See Projects. Ref (project reference). A permanent 20-letter code that identifies a project, shown under its name in the project switcher and in Project settings. It never changes when you rename the project. See Project settings. Resource. FHIR’s word for one kind of record, such as a Patient, an Appointment or an Observation (a measurement). Each resource type has its own fields. See Data browser and FHIR server. Sandbox. The free practice environment that test keys talk to. It behaves like the real API but is separate from production, meant for invented data only, and cleaned up after 90 days without updates. See Sandbox rules. Scope. What a key is allowed to do. Read lets it fetch and search records; Write lets it create, update and delete them (but not read them back). Scopes are fixed when the key is created. See Access: API keys. Signing secret. A password, starting with whsec_, used to stamp each webhook message so your server can prove it really came from ClinikAPI. It is shown once when you add the webhook, stored encrypted, and replaced by selecting Rotate secret. See Webhooks. Standby (failover standby). A second copy of your project’s server kept ready; if the main one fails, the standby takes over. Included on Team, optional on Pro. See Compute and Disk. Synthetic data. Invented data that looks real but describes no real person. It is the only kind allowed in the sandbox. See Sandbox rules. Test key. An API key starting with clk_test_ that works only against the sandbox. It is free on every plan. Compare live key. See Access: API keys. Two-factor sign-in. A second step after your password: a 6-digit code from an authenticator app on your phone. Even if someone learns your password they cannot sign in without your phone. See Security. Webhook. A message that ClinikAPI sends to a web address on your server when something happens, such as a patient being created, so you do not have to keep asking. See Webhooks.

Other words you may meet

Endpoint. The web address on your server that receives webhook messages. FHIR. The international standard for exchanging health records that ClinikAPI uses. It gives every kind of record a predictable shape. NDJSON. A text file where each line is one complete record. This is what Exports produce. Request ID. A unique code on every API call. Quote it to support, and find it in Logs. Status code. The three-digit answer to a request: 2xx success, 4xx a problem with the request, 5xx a problem on our side.
